False Claims by Insured

Various statutes prohibit the submission of false or fraudulent claims or evidence in connection with insurance claims. A person who commits such fraud may be subject either to civil liability to an insurer or to prosecution for a crime.

Insurance Considerations in Mergers and Acquisitions

Insurance policies may be considered significant assets of a company engaged in a merger or acquisition. Although comprehensive general liability policies often contain an anti-assignment clause, such clauses normally are narrowly construed to bar assignment of rights under insurance policies only if the assignment expands the obligations of the insurer.

Types of Insurance Companies

The structure of an insurance company may affect how it does business. Insurance companies may take the form of regular stock companies, may be mutual insurance companies, or may be "captive" subsidiaries of companies that effectively are self-insured.

Types of Health Insurance

Health insurance can be organized into three categories. They are disability income insurance, medical cost insurance, and accidental injury or death insurance.

Aviation Insurance Pools

Insurance pools have developed in response to the magnitude of potential losses from an occurrence involving aviation. Aviation insurance generally covers risks arising from the operation of aircraft and ground facilities for aircraft. A single occurrence involving aircraft or an airport could result in catastrophic exposure that would exceed the capacity of a single insurer and its reinsurers.
